wordpress SEO banner

SEO is one of those things we all know is important, but can be a big question mark or unknown for many people or companies.

The hard part is that while we can definitively say that some things will help improve a websites rankings, there is no guaranteed winning formula or strategy to SEO and it can be a hard skill to learn.

No matter your SEO experience level, we’ve put together 4 things anybody can do to improve their website easily.

Add alt text to your images

Alt text (or descriptions, tags or attributes) are used to describe the actual appearance and function of an image on a page.

This is also a big part of website accessibility as it helps those who are vision impaired understand what is on your website and what the image contains.

How you do this is slightly different depending on what CMS you use, but it is usually a fairly easy thing to implement (Moz 2021).

Pro Tip! Do these as you upload images, it’s a huge pain to do these all in one go, especially if you have a lot of image content

Make sure your images aren’t too big and are the right type

When it comes to websites, size does matter. Make sure that the images you’re uploading aren’t too large, as this can negatively impact your site speed and most importantly your user experience.

You can either use a compressor, or make sure you’re exporting images at an appropriate web size to do this.

Also be sure to use an appropriate common image type like GIF, PNG, or JPEG.

Remove unused plugins, images, or content you no longer need

The backend of a website can get pretty cluttered over time.

If you have duplicates, unused images, content, plugins or tools you no longer have purpose for, be sure to remove them to free up space as this can help with site speed.

Pro Tip! We set a reminder in my calendar every 6 months to do a review and clean of unused content to free up space

Ensure every page has a unique meta title and description

Meta titles and descriptions are snippets which provide search engines a summary of your page’s content. These are often the results that appear listed when you use a search engine.

While it doesn’t directly impact your SEO, it can impact your user click through rate from searches. Which if Google considers your site to be a good result, based on your position can help your website move you up the rankings (Yoast 2020).

So, I’ve done all that. Does that mean my site will now instantly be #1 on Google?

Sadly no. The biggest thing to learn with SEO is that nothing happens overnight. It’s a journey rather than a race and takes time and patience to get it right.
